Ali is a graduate in Mathematics from the Australian National University (1977). He spent 27 years in the financial services industry in both Singapore and Malaysia. In the first 12 years he was a trader with banks, later, he moved into sales of financial products and services. He was a director of Malaysia’s financial derivative exchange and its clearing-house for 3 years in the late 1990s.
He left the financial services industry in 2005 and then on until today spends time with the civil society movement covering socio-economic and political issues. He is a founder/director of an NGO called Muslim Professionals Forum (www.mpf.org.my). He is on the Board of Directors of a public university called Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (www.unisza.edu.my) and a town councillor of a seaside town of Mersing (www.mdmersing.gov.my).
